Questions & Answers

01

Where does the name Ayana come from?

The starting point of Ayana is Bozcaada, known in antiquity as Tenedos. On this island where we spent our summers, Ayana is the name of a small cove. It is also the name of a guesthouse we pass each morning on our way to swim at Salhane. One day, while walking past that same corner, we paused and realised that our name had to be Ayana. Across different languages Ayana carries many meanings, but above all it holds feminine and matriarchal associations, with strong symbolic references. The thistle flower at the centre of our logo, a wildflower that grows on the island, is a subtle nod to another meaning of Ayana: wildflower.

02

Why wood?

Wood is, by nature, a living material. Its vitality continues over time, gradually adapting to its surroundings and responding to the rhythm of the space it inhabits — much like people do. We draw inspiration from this familiarity when thinking about the relationship between form and space in our designs.

03

Name 3 forms that recall Ayana for you.

Devedikeni (a wildflower), a statue of Kybele at the Istanbul Archeological Museum, the view from Salhane, Bozcaada.

04

Why Ayana?

Because Bozcaada is an island, the journey there — and back — always includes a pause. Before setting off, you find yourself waiting for the ferry that crosses from the mainland to the island. Our idea of Ayana begins at that moment. It is the brief pause you allow yourself before heading towards a journey. In that pause, time bends. You begin to create space for yourself, and slowly expand it. Through our furniture, we try to give form to that space and make it tangible.

05

How long does it take for my order to be prepared?

Each piece is produced by hand. Finalizing the design, allowing the wood to rest, shaping it and completing the finishing process all require their own care and time. For this reason, we prefer not to rush the process. Orders are usually ready to ship within 4–6 weeks.

Beloved Prophet: The Love Letters of Kahlil Gibran and Mary Haskell

"We love discovering people who lived long before us– people we may never have had the chance to meet– through the texts they wrote, the images they created, and the traces they left behind. These letters, brought together by Pablo Coelho, flow from Gibran’s heart and find their direction in the hands of Mary Haskell."
